The role of bats in mosquito control
In spring, as soon as it emerges from hibernation, the pipistrelle (European bat) can feed on several thousand mosquitoes in a single night. Installing bat nest box on facades of houses helps the bat to re-establish itself in urban areas, and is the perfect complement to a larger-scale ecological mosquito control solution such as the QISTA mosquito traps. As well as being an effective anti-mosquito solution, bats play a very important role in the environment. It acts as a natural insecticide and is a real regulator of harmful insect populations.
- Ecological and weather-resistant, the bat nest box is made from cedar wood and has 2 fixing hooks on the back.
- Size : 22.5×12.5x34cm
Tips
Installing a bat nest box
- The bat nest box should be installed at the end of winter (early April), so that bats can settle in as soon as they come out of hibernation, or at the end of summer.
- Hang it at a height of at least 2 to 3 meters to protect bats from predators. If the area is frequented by cats, make sure they cannot reach the bat nest box.
- The bat nest box should preferably face south, south-east or west, so that it gets plenty of sunlight (8 to 10 hours a day).
- Clear any obstacles under the bat nest box to make it easier to access.
- Check that rainwater cannot seep in.
- Fix the bat nest box either to a building (on the facade, as close as possible to the roof), or to a post, or to a solitary tree or on the edge of a forest. Trees are the least appropriate choice for the pipistrelle (the target species because it is common and effective at hunting mosquitoes), which is mainly anthropophilic (preferring human structures).
- Check the stability of the fixing point.
- Maintain a certain distance from human activities (so as not to disturb the occupants). Choose a quiet spot away from powerful lighting (bats are not blind), and do not touch the bat nest box after it has been installed.
- If the support is a building or a post, give priority to the use of galvanised screws rather than nails, in order to withstand outdoor weather conditions and extend the life of the fixing.
- If the support is a tree, it must be protected. Prevent any activity that might cause it to shake and use a wire to tie the bat nest box around the tree, placing pieces of wood between the trunk and the wire.
- If after 2 years the bat nest box is still not occupied, reposition it. The bats may simply not have spotted it.
- If a second bat nest box is available, install it right next to the first. This allows the animal to switch nesting places when the temperature in one has risen too high.
